HISTORY of the SUSQUENANGO BURGEE
SUSQUENANGO craft sail under their own singularly recognized pennant. It is as distinctive in the boating world as a fingerprint. Yet, unlike a fingerprint, it is a symbol shared by all SUSQUENANGO members.

It is perhaps, fitting that we occasionally pause to reflect on some of the heritage that we have come to take for granted. Since 1957, our own pennant has indicated to the world the presence of one 1st class Squadron, SUSQUENANGO. This banner was conceived shortly after the founding of our Squadron by one of our Certificate Holders, Mrs. Betty Rose.

How was it chosen? What does it mean? In researching this article, only the following has come to light.

Reflecting on a sailors life, she took a splash of the sunshine that warms every cruising man's destiny and shaped it into the familiar pennant streamer. On this triangular surface was emblazoned the cardinal points of the mariner's compass, for it is in each of these directions our courses take us. This was fashioned from the "Deep Water Blue", over whose fathoms we are privileged to sail. Protectively encircling this device were placed four arcs of brilliant red, taken from those never-to-be-forgotten sunsets we treasure in our memories of quiet anchorages at evening-time. So it was, from these marterials of nature, our beloved standard was created; and Betty, you did it so well.

The selection of this pennant had stood the test of time. Its popularity and acceptance is best shown by the numbers happily plying our waterways, and now you know how it came to be .......... or did it happen, just like that?
