GPS WAYPOINT NAVIGATION SEMINAR

A Hands-on Workshop

(This seminar does not cover Automotive GPS Units)

Saturday - October 24, 2009

 GANDER MOUNTAIN

 Johnson City, NY

 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM

To safely cruise larger bodies of water recreational boaters use a number of piloting techniques. Typically boaters will follow a course on a nautical chart using their on-board compass with a technique referred to as “dead reckoning”. A somewhat more advanced form of piloting using a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit is called waypoint navigation. The local organization of the United States Power Squadron, Binghamton’s Susquenango Power Squadron, is offering a one day seminar in the use of GPS units on recreational boats.

GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to relate the GPS to your charts which provide essential information about what is around you.

The seminar will cover GPS Waypoint Navigation, including:

How to use your GPS set—Buttons, Screens, and Menus

How to perform basic navigation with GPS—Waypoints, Routes, and  Staying on Course

Relating GPS with Charts

Hands-on exercises performing waypoint navigation

This seminar is a hands-on, button-pushing class intended to open up the vast capabilities of these electronic marvels. In addition to topics on practical GPS navigation, the seminar will include exercises using your own GPS units.   We will try to group tables by brand of GPS.

There is a $25.00 fee for the seminar which includes a book and handouts.  (Squadron members receive a discount)

Bring your own GPS and owner's manual.

WE WILL BREAK FOR LUNCH FOR 30 MINUTES AROUND NOON.
